What is the Adopt-A-Highway Program?

The McHenry County Adopt-A-Highway Program is a public service that allows volunteer groups to contribute to their community by collecting litter along designated sections of county highways.

Who is eligible to adopt a highway?

Nearly any group can participate! This includes families, neighborhood associations, businesses, civic organizations, clubs, schools, and religious groups. As long as your group is motivated to help keep our county clean, you are welcome to apply.

    How do we apply?

    • Find a Section: Use the interactive map on the MCDOT website to identify an available section, noting its ID number and location.

    • Submit Application: Download the application form from the documents section. The completed form should be emailed to [email protected].

    • Await Approval: All applications must be approved by the McHenry County Transportation Committee and the County Board. You will be notified once a decision is made.

What are the responsibilities of a volunteer group?

    • Organize and conduct at least four litter cleanups annually for your two-year term.

    • Ensure all volunteers watch the required safety training video provided by MCDOT.

    • The group coordinator must request supplies and report cleanup dates to MCDOT.

    • Follow all safety guidelines during cleanups.

    • 10 Garbage pickers

    • Official "Clean Up Crew Working" temporary road signs
